Our Breeding Goals

With the help of genomic selection (GS), QTL and family selection, we can for each new generation breed roe with greater resistance to selected diseases with ever higher growth, increased pigmentation and stable fat percentage. We have the opportunity to customize products adapted to our customers' needs by selecting the parent animals that have the desired properties.


Growth is one of our main properties and has a big importance in our breeding program. Individual breeding values are estimated based on how the family and the individual itself presents. For our female fish lines that we cross with male fish from the breeding core in order to produce roe for sale, the emphasis is especially on growth. The aim is to achieve a perfect combination between growth and increased resistance to diseases and parasites. Quality properties such as slaughter and fillet yield, pigment in the fillet and fat percentage are emphasized, in addition to the population based on information that is collected from siblings in test slaughter.


Since 2004, we have selected lice resistant individuals in our breeding core. Today our most important tool is genomic selection. Read more about breeding against lice in the article Arvesølv mot lus [Silver heirlooms against lice] that has been printed in the magazine Norsk Fiskeoppdrett.


PD has been in the breeding program since 2008. Genomic selection is today’s tool. 


Breeding has contributed to transforming a big problem such as IPN was a few years ago to an almost non-existent problem. We have unveiled a QTL that is closely related to resistance against the disease and we can today deliver roe based on this. The vast majority of our customers chooses IPN-strong roe.


ISA is intermittently a problem in some specific regions. Our selection program for ISA stretches back to 2001. From autumn 2016 we are using genomic selection to produce roe with increased resistance to ISA.


SRS is mainly a problem in Chile. StofnFiskur has worked with genomic selection and SRSthrough many years and a large percentage of roe they supply to Chile is selected from SRS- resistant parent animals.


We can produce roe with increased resistance to one or more diseases; the more features the more demanding is the production and therefore fewer parents individuals with the desired properties. 

The product is named according the pathogen it is selected for. Eg. SalmoBreed PD. For two properties the product is named DUO (Salmobreed DUO, StofnFiskur DUO), for three properties product group is named TRIOand four properties QUATRO
